Sharing individual posts 

The Yoast SEO meta box in the Post editor also contains a Social tab. There, you can control what the social preview of the post looks like. Choose an image, a title, and a description, and leave the rest to the plugin. If you want to see what the post looks like, you can do that with Yoast SEO Premium.

Why is the length of the keyphrase important?

Keyphrases are the terms you want to rank for, so you need to use them in your texts. Longer keyphrases are better for ranking because they allow you to be more specific. Of course, the keyphrase should never be an excuse for having poorly readable content. So, you should not make the keyphrase too long, either.

Avoid making your text sound unnatural and difficult to read

Let’s say you want to write about a red wine stain removal product. So, you come up with the keyphrase [fast and easy way to remove red wine stains]. Now, imagine having to use this keyphrase throughout your text. You risk making it repetitive and difficult to read. A simple solution would be to shorten the keyphrase to something like [remove red wine stains]. This shorter version is much easier to incorporate into a text in several places, without compromising readability, and you are still targeting the same content keywords.

Make you text more engaging with synonyms and word forms 

In Yoast SEO Premium, you don’t have to stick to the exact words of your keyphrase. You can also use synonyms and different word forms. That will help you keep your keyphrase at an optimal length while keeping your writing engaging. So, for example, instead of saying [remove red wine stains] over and over, you can also say [removes red wine stains] or [red wine stains removal]. 

How to get the right length of a keyphrase?

You will find the keyphrase length check in the SEO analysis of the Yoast meta box. If your keyphrase is too long, you will get an orange bullet point. In that case, consider shortening the keyphrase. If the length of your keyphrase is right, you will see a green bullet point in the feedback.

Yoast SEO supports function words in specific languages. For those, the optimum keyphrase length is up to 4 content words. If your language doesn’t have function word support in Yoast SEO, you can use up to 6 words in your keyphrase.

Why do I need to tell search engines what to do with the links? 

Both internal and external links are essential for SEO. Internal links help search engines understand your site structure, while external links help them understand your website’s relationship to other sites. With Yoast SEO, you get control over how search engines view the links you add on your site.

Choose which sites you assign link value to

Imagine this. You really dislike the herb cilantro. In fact, you dislike it so much you have a website dedicated to cilantro alternatives. To present your arguments against cilantro, you want to link to a site that praises it. But, if you do that, you will be giving credit to that site and sending a signal to search engines that the site is a valuable resource. So what do you do? You can use Yoast SEO to easily add a nofollow attribute to the link. In that way, you will tell search engines: No, I do not support this page, and I am not giving it any value.

Make it clear which of your links are sponsored

Sometimes you may need to link to your sponsor’s website. That means that you get compensated to place the link, but you don’t necessarily think the website is valuable. With Yoast SEO, you can easily qualify sponsored links, so that search engines understand what they are.

Get the less valuable pages on your site automatically taken care of

Internal links are also crucial for SEO. Search engines use them to make sense of your site, and its structure. From time to time, you may need to link to some of your pages that are not very valuable for SEO. Like, you log in, or registration pages. Yoast SEO automatically adds a nofollow attribute to such pages, which helps both your SEO and search engines. 

How does adding link attributes work in Yoast SEO

In the Advanced tab of the Yoast SEO metabox, you can choose the nofollow option to prevent search engines from following the links on the whole page. 

Alternatively, you can set attributes to individual links. You can find the Yoast SEO link settings for individual links when you click the link icon in the WordPress block editor.

The bad news is that there is no magic number you can hit and make your pages rank. However, some general guidelines can help you adjust the word count, depending on the type of page you are writing. Why do I need to check the length of my content? 

The lenght of your content is just one aspect of its quality. Still, it is an important aspect to consider, for a few reasons.

Make sure you have enough words to provide high-quality content

Users search online to find solutions to their problems. Search engines want to give those users the best answers. At the same time, search engines are getting better at reading content. Ok, but what does providing the best answer have to do with word count? Well, although it is not a rule, generally speaking, high-quality content is comprehensive, which often means that it is lengthy.

If your texts are too short, search engines may see that as “thin” content, which rarely qualifies as the best result. Sometimes, you can provide a satisfactory answer in a few sentences. But, more often, to cover a topic well, you will most likely need a lengthier post.

Rank for long-tail keyphrases and synonyms

When you write longer texts, you have a chance to use your keyphrase multiple times. That helps search engines understand your topic. Keep in mind that writing longer posts should not equal keyphrase stuffing. On the contrary, take the opportunity to also use related keyphrases or their synonyms. In that way, you make your text more engaging for your audience, and you increase your chances to rank. 

Adapt the length to the type of page you are writing

There are different types of pages that require different word counts. For example, a cornerstone page that aims to cover every aspect of a topic needs to have at least 900 words. On the other hand, a taxonomy page, where you only need to give an overview of the page’s content, can contain as little as 250 words.

How does it work

Yoast SEO has a set minimum number of words that are required to rank, depending on the page type (see table below). If your content has less than the minimum required words on a specific page, Yoast SEO will give you feedback.

A green bullet point means you have enough words and all is well. A red bullet point means you need to improve the text and increase the word count. Clicking on the links in the feedback will give you more information on what you need to do to improve your text.

Firstly, make sure to use the Google Preview and snippet editor in Yoast SEO. You can find the snippet editor in the Yoast SEO meta box, which is located under the main content block of your post or page. The first thing you’ll see is the snippet preview. The snippet preview shows what your post or page – probably – looks like in the search results. Click on the Edit snippet button, to reveal the input fields for the title, the slug, and the meta description. Fill in those fields the best as you can, and don’t forget to include the keyphrase in them!

In case you forgot to include the keyphrase in any of your snippet elements, Yoast SEO is here to remind you! Three separate checks are there to ensure that you use your keyprhase in the title, the meta description, and the slug.

It’s straightforward. If you used the keyphrase in the title, the slug, and the meta description, you get the green light. A red bullet point means you forgot to include the keyphrase in the slug, the meta description or the title. In some cases, there will be room for improvement. For example, you might have the keyphrase in the middle of the title. Yoast SEO will issue an orange bullet point, suggesting that you may want to move the keyphrase to the beginning and make it more prominent. Features of the Yoast Duplicate Post plugin

The Duplicate Post plugin is built to blend into the background, allowing you to work without noticing it. You can customize the plug so that it fulfils its duty in a way that makes sense to you.

Two modes: Clone or New Draft

The Yoast Duplicate Post plugin adds two simple links to your post overview: Clone and New Draft. Simply click the Clone button to make a copy of that specific post or page. Click the New Draft link to copy that post or page and open it in the editor right away. You can also do this straight from the admin bar in the post editor or from the post settings itself — look for the Copy to a new draft link.

Set the plugin to your liking
You can fine-tune the plugin to your liking. In the settings, you determine exactly what the plugin does and doesn’t duplicate for you. In the settings, you can also change where the copy page buttons appear.

Determine which roles get to do what

Clean up the URLs of your category archives

Simple, user-friendly URLs make your users happy and keep your SEO healthy. Did you know that your category archive pages also get their unique URLs? In WordPress, a default URL for a category archive can look like this: www.example.com/category/category-name/post-title. Each site is unique, so, depending on your goals, you might want to strip the category base and get something that looks like this: www.example.com/category-name/post-title.

Keep low-value RSS feeds out of search results

Search engines follow and index RSS URLs and show them in the search results. The problem is, some of those URLs, like comment feeds, are of low value. Your SEO will benefit if you prevent low value feeds from showing up in search engines. When you use Yoast SEO, this problem is automatically solved for you. How? We add a piece of code that tells search engines not to follow specific RSS URLs. It takes no effort on your part, yet you level up your SEO game!

Automatically redirect media URLs with thin content

WordPress creates a separate attachment page for all the media you upload. Those pages get their own URL, and search engines index them. The problem is, those pages have no valuable content. All you usually see on such pages are the media and its title.

Yoast SEO has a solution. By default, we redirect all attachment pages to the URL of the media. In that way, we prevent search engines from landing and indexing pages with thin content. It’s a small but significant step to better SEO and higher rankings for you!

Remove unnecessary archive pages and freshen up your site structure

Categories and tags are great for so many things: SEO, site structure, your users, search engines. So, maintaining category and tag archive pages makes sense. But, there are also less available archive pages like author or date archives. They can cause duplicate content, hurt your SEO, and cause unnecessary clutter. It may be in your site’s best interest to disable those archive pages completely. In Yoast SEO, we let you do that!

If you insist on keeping the author and/or date archives, we also allow you to noidex them, so they don’t appear in search results! Keeping your potential visitors from landing on low-quality pages is a key step in getting great rankings!

This new plugin is an extension of our regular Local SEO for WordPress plugin. If you have that and you don’t need the WooCommerce integration, then you are already set. You won’t need both. Local SEO for WooCommerce focuses on two main issues: it makes sure your contact pages are excellent and it adds features to WooCommerce to make selling locally easier. It enhances your local search result pages with Google Maps, the correct address and opening hours. It can even provide a store location finder, so customers can find the nearest location of your business.

The WooCommerce part of Local SEO for WooCommerce makes it possible for people to pick up their order at your local store or location. You can set the preferred shipping method and present the customer with a nice message announcing when the order is ready for pickup. You can also set the costs per category or location, if any. We’ve added new shipping statuses, so customers can now see if the product is shipped to your location and when it’s ready to pickup. Of course, you can keep your customers up to date with shipping emails.

To submit an editors’ picks list, you need to create a custom RSS feed. Luckily, our News SEO plugin has you covered! In the backend you’ll find the following settings:

You’ll have to upload a logo image here, which must match either of these two formats:

1. Width of 250px, Height between 20 and 40px
2. Height of 40px, Width between 125 and 250px

On each post, you have the option to tick a checkbox that adds that post to the editors’ picks RSS feed. Pick 5 of your best most recent articles so there’s a list to start with, and you’re ready to click the last button and submit the editors’ picks feed to Google!
