Major update of WordPress SEO (1.5)
Today we’re releasing what’s probably the single biggest update to our WordPress SEO plugin since its initial release. It improves speed, fixes a ton of bugs and edge cases and adds a new bulk title & description editor. On top of that we’ve changed several default settings and added some smaller new features. This post addresses all of it, so keep on reading.
Rewrite of option and post metadata handling
Every post in WordPress has metadata, and our WordPress SEO plugin adds more metadata to that. From indexing settings to meta descriptions and titles. We used to store those in a manner that was not as efficient as we wanted it to be. So Juliette, who became a committer in WordPress SEO a few months ago, rewrote the entire logic. This fixes a ton of bugs we’d encountered over the years but, more importantly, makes us use the database a whole lot less.
Speed improvements
Along with these rewrites to how we save the plugins options and post metadata, we implemented a new class loader. This class loader make code load only when it’s needed. Leading to a far smaller memory footprint and a lot faster performance on both frontend and backend.
We also rewrote several of the queries used for the XML sitemap generation. Leading to a 70% decrease in the number of queries used to generate the index sitemap. Making that a lot faster too.
Pippin, from EasyDigitalDownloads, has been running the 1.5 beta on easydigitaldownloads.com for a while already, when he flipped. This is what the performance graph looked like:
That’s a 20 to 30% performance increase. Granted, Pippin was suffering from a bug in WordPress SEO that most of you probably have not been hit by. But this shows a tremendous improvement was made.
New bulk editor
With this release, we’ve merged the SEO Extended plugin into core, with the help of its creator, Faison Zutavern of the Orion Group. It looks pretty cool and allows you, as you’ve guessed, update titles or descriptions in bulk:
Smaller updates to social features
We’ve added / changed several small things about the Social tab:
- For OpenGraph, the object type of a page should now be more accurate, so Facebook and others using OpenGraph can more accurately detect what type of page they’re dealing with.
- For Twitter, you can now switch between “Summary” cards and “Summary with large image” cards, an oft requested feature.
- For Google+ and rel author implementation, we’ve taken away some of the features that were leading to issues with Google. The default setting of the plugin is now to only show rel=author on single posts and nowhere else. Enabling or disabling rel=author for a post type is very easy from the Titles & metas page, should you wish to. You can no longer show rel=author on the homepage as Google has been pretty clear about not wanting that.
Other changes
There are a few other things worth noting:
- The option to change the category rewrite (removing /category/ from category URLs), has been deprecated. If you have it enabled when you upgrade, it’ll still show, but otherwise you won’t see it anymore. We will be removing this feature entirely as the SEO benefits are now very small to non-existent and it causes numerous bugs with other plugins.
- On the Edit Files dialog you can now, if your webserver allows you to, create a robots.txt file if you don’t have one, and then edit it.
- We have a new Extensions menu item in which you’ll be able to both see our existing extensions for WordPress SEO as well as enter the license keys for those extensions.
Community effort
This release was very much a community effort. We’ve been reaping the rewards of switching to GitHub for the development of WordPress SEO and I think you’ll agree it’s good for all of us. If you’re a developer and have an interest in developing on one of the most popular plugins for the platform, join us on GitHub!
Update to all our SEO plugins
Because this update changes so much about how WordPress SEO works, all the plugins we released that depend on it have been updated too. This means you’ll see updates for Video SEO, Local SEO and WooCommerce SEO too, upgrade both at the same time, or after each other, but know that if you update for instance Local SEO without updating WordPress SEO, you’ll get an update nag. They need each other.
But wait! I run your Premium SEO plugin!
Don’t worry! If you run our WordPress SEO Premium plugin, there’s an update including all of the above changes ready for you in your WordPress install as well. Of course, if you’re a premium plugin customer and you run into any problems with the upgrade, feel free to email our support team.
Over to you!
That’s it, over to you, go update and see how you like it!

Hey all,
please understand we don’t do support in the comments as that doesn’t work at all. If you’re a premium customer, please contact our support team. If not, either become one, or go to the WordPress forums with support questions :)
Hi team,
I have a quick question, would running ‘Add meta tags’ plugin along with your sep plugin be complete over kill and should I just stick to yours? I’m wondering if it’s adding to much and maybe not being so specific.
Love your work
Cheers
Chris
I wouldn’t know why you’d need that plugin? What does it “add” (pun intended ;) )
Have also noticed that I’m unable to write a post when in the visual tab. Only lets me write when in the text tab.
There are loads of reasons this could happen. A comment form is not really an ideal place to give support, so I’m not going to even try.
Using Yoast WordPress SEO and when in Titles & Metas I am unable to open tabs for Home – Post Types – Taxaonomies – Other. What causes this?
This is a new problem and not sure if the last update caused this. Any ideas?
Joe, if you’re a premium customer, please talk to our support team. We can’t do support here.
I seen a huge seo increase in the searches for our local business after upgrading and fixing

Hello Yoast,
I use 3 years of Yoast WordPress Seo plugin.
However, since the last update of the plugin, the results of seo title in Google are disappearing, even with everything right and filled in seo.
Let me know why this failure?
Thank you.

when i posting articles, that html is not clickable.. but when i deactivate seo by yoast everything is working fine.

Curious as to why categories and tags aren’t meta noindexed by default, seems it would be a logical choice, no?
We are seeing updates that we make in the source code to the meta description, but it is not showing at Google, Bing, or other preview sources. It’s been about a week now. Is there something else going on that prevents it from showing up elsewhere when we make updates?
We are using Enfold theme and Yoast 1.5.2.5 breaks the editing components on our pages. Yoast version 1.4.3 doesn’t. Is there an issue with the new update?
Very help ful for me as im a new to wordpress platform
Helpful, thanks! :D
I downloaded the plugin and installed. Now when I click on a post, page, or any setting inside Yoast, I get a blank page. Suggestions?
I discovered that my problem was a conflict between Yoast and WP Social SEO Booster. When I disabled the WP Social SEO Booster plugin, then Yoast worked.
IF YOU WANT TO CONTINUE STRIPPING THE CATEGORY BASE:
– Set your permalinks to a custom structure
– Put ” /%category%/%postname%/ ” (no quotes) in the custom structure field.
– Put a period (.) in the category base underneath. Save. Enjoy your category base being stripped like before.

Problems with my plug in :(
like other people here, the page analysis says things like “keyword density is 0%” “no external links” etc, and then show me yellow or red light..
But is not true, i have my keyword density, outboud links an so… correctly.
Is this just a bug inside the plug in? or is it creating problems also with google search????
I can almost guarantee that there’s also a problem with the “Redirect Attachment URLs” function. I’ve had it set for a year at least, now suddenly the search engines are crawling it and it’s screwed with a little bit of the indexing. I think maybe I’ve found the part of code which handles that. Am playing with it now.
we all are still trying to figure out how the google plus option works and do we use our google plus profile url or our google plus business page url?
thanks, ron
Hi…
Thanks for the update.
Very much improvement.
I like..
We are trying to figure out what “Add Google+ specific post meta data (excluding author metadata)” does.
Hey, thanks for the update. Things have run smoothly for me with the plugin until now though…
Ever since the update, my RSS feed is not working.
When I disable the plugin {sad!} it works.
I’m NOT a techie, but anxious to know how to reconcile so I can return to using your awesome plugin. Thanks!
Plugin Version :
This site is optimized with the Yoast WordPress SEO plugin v1.4.22 – https://yoast.com/wordpress/seo/
Hi Yoast,
With the latest update I am getting http 404 on the XML Sitemap.
Also is there any change in the meta data update as Scribe stopped recognizing the title and description meta data?
I get this error too.
Hi Y!… mm I know that Y with the ! from somewhere else… so let´s rewind…
Hi J!, I was wondering how the “Add Google+ specific post meta data (excluding author metadata)” works. Couldn’t find a way to figure it out.
Let us know!

:-)
I like this plugin,,but iam having one of the key on SEO,, that i need to get fix, please, how fix duplicate title tag on wordpress wich look like is done by yoast seo plugin..??
Hi Yoast or Joost as we say here in South Africa,
I have WordPress SEO 1.5.2.5 installed and with the new update the message to disable “break comments into pages” comes up in red!
The problem is that as an authority advice site we have hundreds of comments on each post all of them with good advice content for all to read. Now if we have our server trying to load 6-700 comments plus nested replies on one page this will more than likely break our server AND severly affect our page load time! This will NOT give our visitors a good experience of our site either. I do realise that Google will see each of the duplicate pages as duplicate content :-( , this is another bad algorithm move on Googles part.
I value your expert advice over the years, what is your suggestion to solve this conundrum.
Look forward to your reply.
Regards,
Janek
I love what you have done so far and would love if you could add all the twitter cards too with granular choice!
Cheers for a great job.
Many more people are finding my posts via search engines since I installed your SEO WordPress plugin.
One problem – If I edit things enough I eventually get:
“The keyword doesn’t appear in the first paragraph of the copy, make sure the topic is clear immediately.”
When it is not true. I can’t make it go away.
I’ve enabled a sitemap, yet I get a 404 Error. Is there a fix to this? http://towerflower.com/sitemap_index.xml
Looks like there are others with the same problem.

I know this sounds strange, but I had the same issue, and I just enabled and disabled the sitemap several times, adjusting settings to see if that helped. I even enabled and disabled the plugin a time or two… Eventually the plugin and sitemap were enabled and working (so I am just going to leave it :) ) I will wait a month or so to update the yoasts plugin on any of my other sites….. Looks like they still have plenty of bugs to work out.
Hi guy, I know this may be a strange fix, but it was recommended on another forum and worked for me!
-> Go to SEO -> Sitemaps -> Click on Save
-> Go to Permalinks -> Click on Save
-> Go to SEO, Sitemaps -> Uncheck the Sitemaps
-> Click on Save
-> Go to SEO, Sitemaps -> Check the Sitemaps (again)
…..it worked for me, hope it helps someone else :)
I’ve never been comfortable with the sitemaps feature — at all. I don’t trust it. I’ve never been properly indexed on either of my company’s sites after switching off AIOSEO.. Yet two days ago one of my clients approached me requesting basic SEO on a WP instance which didn’t even have friendly URLs or permalinks. I installed a less popular plugin which generates only three metas. And, I used a sitemap plugin which misspelled Google. Can you imagine the shock when I sent everything through webmaster tools, and Google indexed every last page, with correct sitelinks, in UNDER TWO HOURS. WHAT THE CRAP? Google “bluewater counseling oregon” and compare it with Bing.
Another client site DOES use Yoast, plenty of META keywords, AND the sitemap feature. I installed a second XML sitemap plugin on top of it (the other plugin uses static sitemap.xml) and sent both URLs to Google. Guess which sitemap indexed, and which one was reporting an error and hadn’t crawled it in over 3 months? You guessed it! See for yourself….
http://thebestofficeservices.net/sitemap.xml
http://thebestofficeservices.net/sitemap_index.xml
Give me a few minutes and I’ll have an idea of what is causing it.
I ended up taking a few hours and wrote my own sitemaps. By hand. Command line.
Thanks for a great update. I noticed you added a second twitter card setting, will you ever consider adding support for all the twitter card variations and allow it to be selected at a more granular level post by post?
Thank you so much for such an amazing plugin! I have no doubt you’re aware of this, but based on the Google SERP redesign that is now out of testing and is live, title tags are no longer given 70 characters in SERPs. Instead, title tags are now based on a fixed width of 512px, so the number of characters each SERP result gets in the title is based on a variety of things, like the width of individual letters, the length of the query in question (the longer the query, the more bold letters you have in the SERP title), etc. Thanks to Moz for the post about it. An awesome feature for the WordPress SEO plugin would be to implement a title tag preview tool (much like Moz has created) that would show us exactly what Google will show the end user. Downside is that no matter what, we’ve lost control over how the title will display in SERPs, as we can’t account for every possible query that would pull each unique page on our site. Anyway, the preview tool being embedded in the plugin would still be a good thing, I believe.
Thanks again for everything!
Thanks for it. Love your Work. I am using your plugin on my site. :)
Great plugin, thank you!
Granted that once it’s available I will buy the “new” version of News SEO, is there anybody who can suggest me an interim alternative?
I would like to keep using Yoast’s XML Sitemap just adding a plugin hopefully compatible with WordPress SEO for Google News.
Since we are a news website it’s quite crucial for us so I hope some of you can recommend us something worth
I have the same problem (news site, no news sitemap) and I was going to roll back 3 versions to get a working news map as I just discovered it was broken. The other news sitemap plugin’s all have more issues than rolling back will get me.
Because we are a news site we can not wait till sometime 2nd q of 2014.
Thanks for all your amazing work!
Hi Yoast + Team,
your last releases (and bugfix-updates included) cause so much problems than never before. What is happening to you guys ;-) & ;-( ?
Thats what I love about Yoast, not only is the plugin worked on until perfection, but the presentation is really a pleasure to read.
Thanks guys, you’re the best.
For some reason, since the upgrade, when our content team tries to update meta description, it reverts back when the page/post is updated.
hi
i can’t see file menu to edit the .htaccess and robots.txt in the seo menu.
please help
Hi,
since the last update the sitemap is not working!
Thanks for fixing it ;-)
Lukas
Hi Friend,
How to Update this Plugin.. ?
Ever since upgrading, I have noticed what I think might be a bug in the Page Analysis tab. When I re-save a draft or update a post, the Page Analysis tab does not update. For example, if I add an outbound link or improve keyword density, the updates don’t show up and I don’t get the “green light” credit for it. Is this a bug?
Hi,
is there any way to force wordpress seo plugin NOT to turn off Open Graph tagging ?
Right now when I activate Virtue theme, all “og:” tags provided by your plugin disappear. The theme itself doesn’t generate any OpenGraph tags, but it does mislead some functions in wordpress seo plugin.
Anyway, this plugin saved me a lot of work.
Thanks!
Just found this bug fixed in recent release. I’ve missed github subject regarding this issue. Thanks again for this great plugin.
Hello, after the update to 1.5.2.2 i cant see the sitemap anymore, I tried deactivating and activating the plugin but only thing i see its a 404 page not found.
Is there a solution for this issue please?
Thanks!
Hello, after recent update to 1.5.2.2 i have a white screen.
I got this debug information:
—————————————————–
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare yoast_breadcrumb() (previously declared in /mnt/webb/d0/48/53938048/htdocs/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/inc/wpseo-functions.php:82) in /mnt/webb/d0/48/53938048/htdocs/wp-content/themes/vipress/inc/breadcrumps/yoast-breadcrumbs.php on line 294
Any Idea how to fix ?
Has there been a fix for this identified
No, I have until now no solution for this problem. I need help …
Your theme is doing it wrong, they should fix their bug. For more information: https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/issues/928
thanks for this article…

Shame about the update to remove stripping the category base from the urls. One of the only features i use this plugin for along with title editing, especially on smaller websites that don’t require some other features. It alters the whole dynamics of websites when you say to some visit slash category slash news instead of just slash news. Used to allow a nice flow of pages to categories in the urls.
OK – so with over 150 sites that all have individual sitemap.xml files registered with google and bing, is there any easy way to switch to this without having to go update every single entry on google/bing? I understand that there were conflicts with existing sitemap.xml files, but why not give us an option to write over rather than make us do all the work?
Hey guys, love the plug in, but ever since updating I’ve noticed a much higher server load, especially an increase in php-cgi processes. Can you think of any reason this may be taking place?
No our experience is actually the perfect opposite, if you hunt it down to something specific do let us know though!
As for disabling the bulk editor: no, sorry.
Hmmm, I have several instances where I’m hooking into wpseo_metadesc and wpseo_title, could that be an issue?
All I’m doing there is something like this:
add_filter(‘wpseo_title’, ‘custom_title’);
function custom_title($title) {
if (XXX) {
$title = ‘Custom Title’;
} elseif (XXX) {
$title = ‘Custom Title 2’;
}
return $title;
}
Is there something I’m missing that might be bogging the site down?
I’m doing something similar for descriptions because there is certain custom data that needs to be included on some pages.
Hmm there’s probably an easier way to do that, but that shouldn’t slow it down that much. And I have a bug here on yoast.com with the comment / post author thing :)
We added a new filter recently, have to admit I haven’t checked whether it’s in the release yet but otherwise it will be tomorrow, check it here:
https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/blob/master/inc/wpseo-functions.php#l292
Allows you to add replacement variables.
I don’t mean to be one of “those people”, but what might that easier way be? The problem is with some pages it depends on if the user is logged in, others depend on extracting the YEAR from a custom field in the format (YYYY-MM-DD), some on global variables, etc.
Is there another hook I should look into because I can’t seem to figure out a way to manipulate the plug in itself to output this data.
Thanks!
Also, is there any way to disable the bulk editor? As I site with tens of thousands of pages I just don’t need it and even clicking on the link bogs down my server and I’d prefer it just not be there.
As usual yoast new update is rocking. Thanks for the update.
Perfect plugin! Just one litlle thing, normally i could always set a post on no index if i want to but now i cant chose this option? How can i set a page on noindex if i want to, because i dont want duplicate content?
Update jam-packed with new features… got to love that!
“Include in HTML Sitemap” is an option when editing a Post (under the Advanced tab). Is an HTML Sitemap (as opposed to the XML Sitemap) also available with your WordPress SEO plugin?
Thanks.
the new update doesn’t seem to be recognising outbound links, even though I have them in my posts. I have tried removing them and re-adding. i ve noticed alot of people having the SAME PROBLEM
please check that
thanks alot
Great update to the plug-in. A suggestion. Is there a way to toggle the Bulk Editors so that they only apply to “Published” Posts rather than including “Drafts” and “Prviate”? Thanks again.
Chalk that question up to a “duh”. Simply selecting “Published” at the top of the screen before applying the other option does what is needed. So, ignore the question!
I have been unable to access my active plug-ins page ever since the 1.5.2 update. I am a relative novice and I have tried to figure out what to do but that truth is I am in over my head. Is there any way I can delete the plug-in and wait to reinstall it when this problem goes away in a future update?
Here is the places that I can no longer get to on my website:
http://www.fletcherschapel-kinggeorge-va.org/wp-admin/update-core.php
http://www.fletcherschapel-kinggeorge-va.org/wp-admin/plugins.php
PLEASE help!
OK, you can delete my pathetic attempt to ask for help. Problem solved by renaming the plugins file, then logging back into the admin panel, then renaming plugins file back to original name and finally reactivating all the plugins. And I am sure no one will read this or care.
This isn’t a bug, per se, but it’s certainly a potential security issue. I noticed today that the default setting for the XML site maps is to have the author/user sitemap enabled. The problem with this is that the administrator username is visible in the URL string when you click on the user/author sitemap. Sure, it’s easy enough to switch this off in the admin panel, but I would think the default setting should be to hide the user/author sitemap.
The default right now is actually to have it off. Although one can still very easily get to the usernames, normally, just not through this plugin at that point ;).
I installed the plugin a while back and, honestly, didn’t touch any of the settings until today, so it’s been at it’s default settings since the get go. I had to activate it, I promise! The only reason I noticed, is that my crappy web host has been having a lot of brute force attacks, and I installed Wordfence, which tells me which pages on my site get crawled, by who, and what IP addresses try to log in to my admin. One of the sites that got locked out trying to log in got my username right, and I noticed that same location had accessed the author page and grabbed the username from the URL string. Long story short, I found the sitemap XML options and disabled the user/author xml sitemap.
All this to say, you might want to double check just to make sure. ; )
Oh, and I do love your plugin!
Hey guys,
Some great new features here.
I’m not sure if I’m missing something but with this new update I cannot find the noindex option for individual posts/pages.
I can find the nofollow option and the other options like No Archive and No Snippet but no index isn’t showing.
Any idea’s what’s going on?
Thanks,
Adam
I use the Tag Pages plugin that adds the ‘post_tag’ taxonomy to the Page post type. The tags which I have added to my home page were displayed in Yoast WordPress SEO plugin v1.4.24 under the meta description area. Now when I updated the version 1.5.2.2 the tags are missing within the Yoast WordPress SEO plugin area.
Hello!
First of all – thanks for the hard work on this plugin! I’ve been using it for ages :)
I updated it yesterday to this new version and now it seems it’s not working at all. Titles and meta info is not showing anymore, instead, you can only see on the tab the address of the site. I have checked if there was any kind of issue with other plugins but even deactivating them all, it’s still not working. Any ideas? :)
What does the “Add Google+ specific post meta data (excluding author metadata)” check box do specifically…i.e. is this taking out author metadata or just adding additional google metadata that is separate from author metadata which is handled separately?
After updating, Local SEO’s update reminder hasn’t cleared – it’s still showing as needing an update, but it’s the current version.
Otherwise seems fine.. the bulk editors are GREAT.
I am using this plugin in 4 different sites. After I updated to 1.5.2.1 it is working in two sites and other two are showing blank page. Never had this issue with WordPress SEO before :( please fix asap.
Thanks for the update for the SEO plugin!
Sorry guys, but this release is over 0.15 seconds slower than your last on my site.
thanks. i have just updated Yoast seo in my blog,
hope you will give more great free feature.. :D
thanks. i have just updated Yoast seo in my blog,

I updated wordpress seo plugin, but there is no video seo plugin update availible for me. I see the video map is empty now – i rescanned the map, worked well without errors, but the sitemap is still empty. What should i do now?
Great update of a great plugin. Thank you Joost and your team!
thank you for this great plugin. i was using it for about a month and it was working perfect. now after i installed the new update it is making a lot of problems with qtranslate:
some hebrew pages – usually with much data 3k charackters or more the hebrew page will not upload and will give an error message on the page .
this example:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 41943040 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 193115 bytes) in /home/lawofisr/public_html/wp-content/plugins/qtranslate/qtranslate_core.php on line 692
for this page :http://www.lawofisrael.com/IW/hebrew-translation-press/
when i disable wordpress-seo – there is no problem
this problemm occures only on pages with large size hebrew text – about 2k words or more
can you help please?
Sorry if I’m missing something, but, the new Bulk Title Editor simply says “No items found.”
Does this facility need to be activated somewhere?
I’m very glad for the yoast Seo plugin, I use it on many wordpress sites, the update always go fast an it always works very god for all my sites. Thanks for this huge update.
Eliminating the category rewrite, I understand the reason, but WP is not recognizing the new urls in some cases and in other cases it shows the same info (could affect due to duplicate content). Before they showed something like:
http://adondeirhoy.com/conciertos-en-costa-rica
and now it shows
http://adondeirhoy.com/category/conciertos-en-costa-rica
but both show the same info. The other case is this:
http://adondeirhoy.com/category/eventos-deportivos-en-costa-rica/surf shows the content but http://adondeirhoy.com/eventos-deportivos-en-costa-rica/surf shows a 404
Did a 301 on all the categories to avoid the duplicate content. FYI
…seems to have broken my website: “Fatal error: Cannot redeclare yoast_breadcrumbs() in…. ” . Had to revert to 1.4.
Hi,
I was wondering if someone on here can help me with a few questions related to the updated plugin.
1. I’ve went to the social tab and clicked on the Twitter Card option, but when I go and try to validate my twitter card it keeps saying invalid. It ask me to put the address the meta tags are on so I’m assuming it’s the main page? Any idea how to get the twitter card validated so it will work.
2. Is the new Google option in the social tab supposed to be checked? I have no clue what it means
3. I’m currently using Thesis 1.8 and I heard it causes some duplicate meta data/tag issues and I’ve read you have to edit a few lines of codes located in the Thesis Theme root folder or wp-content/themes/thesis_185/lib/classes/head.php
On Line 12, there is a call to the method meta().
$head->meta();
I’ve read you’re supposed to modify this line to only run the method if the WordPress SEO plugin is not detected.
if (!defined(‘WPSEO_VERSION’)) $head->meta();
Do I still need to do this edit to make Yoast WordPress SEO work with thesis 1.8 or is this an outdated method I no longer need?
If anyone can give me some advise on this it would be useful as I’ve been making this edit for every blog and not sure if I still need too. I read it from a blog called WPexpert
Thanks

Great plugin without doubt. I am having a serious problem with my sitemap. When i open the post xml sitemap, i get this a error:
“Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 350810 bytes) in /home/mediconw/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/inc/class-sitemaps.php on line 678 ”
The other sitemaps namely: pages, attachment and media open fine.
However formerly i did not have this problem but it has started occurring recently.
GWT too does not open this sitemap. It says that this sitemap is not according to our sitemap guidelines.
Could you please advise? Can’t get an answer to this anywhere else.
Thank you
I like the bulk update feature, it greatly save time.
V 1.5.2.1
1. site map (http://www.iliatorlin.com/sitemap_index.xml) is no longer viewable in browser ( is not resolving to anything :( )
2. after resubmitting sitemap to Google I can see following indexing error:

Is it only me having such issues? If yes any ideas what am I doing wrong (Everything worked without problems before update). If no – is it bug? is it going to be fixed?

hi all,
I have the same problem with the error on g’s webmastertools: wrong date.

Hi,
I seem to be having the exact same issue with my sitemap too.
I have several post tag sitemaps which are coming up with the invalid date error. I don’t index these pages anyway, but I am always very worried when the sitemap has any issues…
Hopefully they fix this soon.
I found a genuine bug (I think!) – the update disables buttons on a lot of other plugins’ settings page in the admin. In order to add a slide in Soliloquy I had to deactivate Yoast… same for doing an upgrade of Ratings Widget plugin. It reactivated fine after performing those actions… a viable workaround, but worth noting.
If had the same issue…I can’t access any of the buttons in Soliloquy either as a result.
This has been fixed in v1.5.2.2
I am also getting a lof of Google Page Not Found errors where Google is looking for my http://www.site/name of category and not finding it because my site is set up for my http://www.site/category/name of category.
Google Webmaster Tools shows a lot of blocked URLs, problem crawling my site, i.e. “Check to see that your robots.txt is working as expected.”
I am getting a very similar problem. After updating, I receive the following message from Google Webmaster: “The page could not be crawled at this time because it is blocked by the most recent robots.txt file Googlebot downloaded.” And this message appears when searching for my site on Google: “A description for this result is not available because of this site’s robots.txt.” Problem is, I didn’t have a robots.txt file until this update.
You always have a robots.txt file. If you don’t have a physical one, WordPress generates one for you. However, the plugin does absolutely NOTHING that could cause this.
I panicked when I didn’t see the social descriptions and social image tab there. What is the right way to do that now?
Is it enough that I add a featured image and the description in the first tab?
The correct way to add a Facebook description and image to the front page is to edit the front page itself, and go to the “WordPress SEO by Yoast” meta box when you’re editing the page, and there you will have a “Social” tab within that meta box, where you can add a unique Facebook Description, Facebook Image, and Google+ Description, for that page. This also works for every other page too.
Right before the update my Page Analysis was not reading correctly i.e. not reading keyword in first paragraph, not reading keyword density, and not ready outbound links. I thought that the new updates would fix the issue, but it has NOT. It is not reading outbound links and keyword density.
This plugin is a must have for people who both do and do not have a working knowledge of SEO. Every release is that much better than the last. Keep up the great work Yoast Team. Cheers.
Hey Yoast,
Can’t wait to try it! However, I was hoping this new version would have an update to work with Google’s Universal Analytics. Is that still in the pipeline? Thank you!
Hi Yoast,
Thank you for the plugin. I upgraded and then I didn`t have access to my WP dashboard anymore. Went into the C-Panel and deactivated the plugin and then I could login again. I am scared to activate it again. Any reason why this should happen?
Hi! Since the update FB Open Graph isn’t working for all my blog posts. I’m looking the source code and there’s no OG code. Any idea?
With the update, the video seo plugin stop to work and show the following message:
This page contains the following errors:
error on line 2 at column 1: Extra content at the end of the document
Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.

Is there an “official” response regarding the apparent conflict between Genesis breadcrumbs and WordPress SEO breadcrumbs?
As others have reported, Genesis breadcrumbs simply disappear once the new version of WP SEO is installed. That doesn’t seem quite right.
Some users seem to be fine with switching to WP SEO breadcrumbs, but some of my sites have extensive customizations of Genesis breadcrumbs that I would like to have retained. Is there any way to resolve the conflict and allow the Genesis breadcrumbs to function normally?
Have a look here for more info: https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/issues/795#issuecomment-37612543
I’m experiencing the same problem. My Genesis breadcrumbs disappeared after upgrading. I hope they can fix the problem soon.
I made this update and it made my website crash. I am now troubleshooting to figure out why. I had to deactivate the plugin. Did anyone else have the same issue?
Hi, yes I had the same problem. I updated the plugin this morning and couldn`t access my WP dashboard. I went into the C-panel and deactivated the plugin and now I can login again.
Made mine “cras” too. Couldn’t sign in. Had to disable plugin via ftp.
I’m running latest WordPress with WooThemes Canvas.
There is still a rel=author tag left in the head section, but now with a link to an old Google+ profile doesn’t exist anymore. Can I manually change this?
I am not able to select/click any menu except dashboard in admin menu after installing new version of plugin.
Does the new plug-in fix issues with Google webmaster warnings? My robot.txt is the usual WP virtual one but Google webmaster warns me under the post sitemap that certain wp-includes/js/tinymce/ are blocked by my robot.txt. I have 76 warnings.
Hi,
I’ve read that when using this plugin with thesis 1.8 that I have to modify a file in my theme.
I’ve head you have to modfify lib/classes/head.php, relative to the Thesis Theme root folder or wp-content/themes/thesis_185/lib/classes/head.php from the WordPress root folder.
On Line 12, there is a call to the method meta().
$head->meta();
modify this line to only run the method if the WordPress SEO plugin is not detected.
if (!defined(‘WPSEO_VERSION’)) $head->meta();
Do I still need to do this to make Yoast WordPress SEO work with thesis 1.8 or is this an outdated method I no longer need?
I’m pretty new to all of this and was wondering if the option you added in the new update.
Add Google+ specific post meta data (excluding author metadata)
should be checked or not for better seo?
I’m not really sure what this means? I have my google plus profile link pasted in my profile settings are, but not sure if I should enable this feature and it what it does?
Also, I’ve seen some people claim I need to put a specific google code in my wp head area to make the whole google plus author thing work? Is that still needed if I have your plugin installed.
Upgraded to the new 1.5 version, and it crashes the site. Error is
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare yoast_breadcrumb() (previously declared in /home/content/l/f/l/lflblog/html/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/inc/wpseo-functions.php:82) in /home/content/l/f/l/lflblog/html/wp-content/themes/StandardTheme_20/lib/yoast_breadcrumbs.php on line 274
Hey Jerry,
that’s what StandardTheme get for bundling code that they shouldn’t bundle but have people install… Please talk to their support team, not much we can do about this.
Thanks, again, huge fan of your work.
When I updated to the latest 1.5.2, the SEO plugin completely disappeared from my sidebar in WordPress? It says “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.” when trying to view admin.php?page=wpseo_dashboard
We’re on a LEMP stack and our permissions check out just fine on the server. I actually couldn’t even edit posts with this update and had to rollback to 1.4.25
Any ideas to have a successful update?
Thanks!
FYI – this was caused by a conflict with Better WP Security plugin. Once deactivated, the SEO plugin started working. I then re-activated Better WP Security and both plugins now work.
One question on customizing breadcrumbs (note: I’m using Genesis Framework): Is there a function where I can change the prefix (and suffix) for the breadcrumbs. The prefix is currently
, and the suffix is
.
I’d like them to be
and
.
Okay, so that comment didn’t take my code. Basically, I’d like to have the breadcrumbs be inside two divs. One with the class of breadcrumb and another with the class of wrap. Is there a function for this?
There are several filters available to do such things.
For those who might be wondering, this worked:
//* Change breadcrumb wrapper element from ‘span’ to ‘div’
add_filter( ‘wpseo_breadcrumb_output_wrapper’, ‘joe_wpseo_breadcrumb_output_wrapper_filter’ );
function joe_wpseo_breadcrumb_output_wrapper_filter() {
return ‘div’;
}
//* Change breadcrumb wrapper class to ‘wrap’
add_filter( ‘wpseo_breadcrumb_output_class’, ‘joe_wpseo_bc_output_class_filter’ );
function joe_wpseo_bc_output_class_filter( ) {
return ‘wrap’;
}
With the Twitter cards, is there any way to hook into the card type and for certain categories have it use the “video” card type instead?
Basically:
if (is_category(XX) {
$card_type = ‘video’;
}
return $card_type;
Hi Brad,
there’s actually a filter in the twitter card class specifically for that purpose. Check frontend/class-twitter.php
We’re working on better API documentation on this site, you’ll see the inline documentation is pretty damn good :)
Excellent, got that to work easily, but just realized I need to add a lot more for “player” cards. Is there a way to hook in to add new lines as well or should I script something on my own to get things such as width, height and stream in there?
Thanks!
There’s a wpseo_twitter action hook :)
Hi, great update, but I keep getting this ..
No outbound links appear in this page, consider adding some as appropriate.
And there three outgoing links.
I’m loving this update! I have an ecommerce site and having the bulk description and title options save me tons of time when I need to make adjustments. THANK YOU !!
After updating, I’m unable to access settings for Local SEO from Dashboard/SEO/Local SEO, getting the error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined method WPSEO_Local_Admin::get_geo_data() in /home/toddmurp/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wpseo-local/admin/pages/local.php on line 41
This is solved for the moment –
I had trouble with this, having done a major revision on the site in a local environment starting from the previous live database.
The locations were not visible with no activation key.
When we went live with a test site before repointing the domain, we sent an email request for a temporary key for development purposes. None was provided.
Before we took the site live, we de-activated the key on the old site and repointed the domain.
Once live, we could not activate SEO Local with the old key before re-installing it completely, causing the loss of all our location pages, forcing us to rebuild our locations with the site live.
Then, when we upgraded this morning, we got the error message above.
It was cleared by de-activating and deleting Local SEO. Fortunately, when we re-installed the old version, the locations were not lost and are re-activated.
This is the old version of SEO local active now. I anticipate getting an update notification soon from the plugin repository.
Wish me luck on the update..
:P
W3TC’s caching of this page seems to be subpar. Before commenting I didn’t see some answers to a comment and answered a comment. After automatically being logged in by answering the comment I got 6 additional comments displayed.
Looks like the cache doesn’t gets invalidated when new comments are made.
Hi Yoost,
I’ve updated to the latest version of wordpress seo plugin, the error of xml sitemaps was fixed, but breadcrumbs for genesis framework still does not work. I do not know how to fix. please help me.
I see a bug with the new version. The “SEO title” field adds extra backslash () characters before the simple quote (‘) character. The result is that each time I save the page, an extra quote is added so my title look like this:
“Apartments, from studio to large 3 bedroom on the Cap d\\’Antibes and French Riviera.” My page is here.
Thanks for the update guys, and for being on hand to support your community after a big roll-out. Looks like you’ve made some great improvements. I am having a couple of issues though:
After the update to 1.4 (and subsequent update to 1.5) I noticed that my FB og: and Twitter card data had dropped out of my pages (G+ was still present). I had to uninstall and reinstall the plugin to get it working again.
I also seem to be getting debug information in my dashboard (on all the Yoast pages), which is no big deal, just thought I’d let you know.
As already pointed out by others I’m seeing a problem with breadcrumbs after updating to 1.5.2.
My breadcrumb only shows the current page title but none of the links to the previous pages like home or the parent page to the one displayed.
I used the code suggested by you and all was working nine before 1.5.
Thanks
Never mind… It was just missing the home page anchor text. All is working fine now
Second attempt to get help from an earlier post.
I am having major issues with the plugin update. My whole site goes white! I have had to delete the plugin all together to get my site back, and need to get this resolved! Please is there a fix?
In the meantime does anyone have a zip of the Version 1.4.25 that they can share so I can get my SEO back? I love this plugin and really want it to work.
Jerri
Same problem here Jerri… total white-out.
As far as a copy of the older plug-in Github would be where I would look. You can see revisions, and there’s a good chance you can find a copy of the older plug-in on their.
Guys if I can make a suggestion only run WordPress with the ability to back up I know it sounds bad to tell you this now. However for $5 a month you can back your site up using VaultPress, Sucuri or CodeGard.
I have a small issue, but I don’t know if it was existing in an earlier version:
When I’m in a category archive, the meta tags “og:description” and “description” don’t show up in the HTML code although I have set “Categorie: %%category%%” on the taxonomy settings page.
Just to let you know. :-)
Same problem for me….
This is a great update. Can’t wait to dig in and start testing things out!
I’m hoping for BuddyPress compatibility soon, bbpress are already post types, so I can handle those.
Thanks.
A #fuckinggood major release and all the changes are wonderful. The bulk editor is great!!!
Keep up the good work and thanks for this great plugin!!
as somebody who purchased the premium (preview edition) of WP SEO I thought that the redirects would be automated as that was the entire reason I purchased it. There are other plug-ins that can automate redirects that do not tap into Webmaster tools. I based my decision on your stating that the plug-in would be out at the end of October as well as its ability to import from redirection. I waited for it to come out and found some capability. However to have plug-in handle 301 redirects is really not ideal. I thought this one would be different. I would really appreciate an idea of when you will be able to accept imports from redirection as well as allow for exports of redirects in CSV format so I can give them to my hosting company. I thought besides the support the idea was to give people more functionality I really hope that you get there sometime soon. I agree about the 404’s showing up have corrected them was screaming frog a tool much better suited for redirection, and this send still I think there’s something wrong with this plug-in causing for 404’s to be re-created.
I had planned to use synthesis hosting which I’ve have paid for based on your statement about it making the correct 301 redirects for synthesis. Now I understand it must be a system similar to WP engines or done on the config file manually.
A lot like the person who’s posted above me I really did think this was going to be something different. I am ready to turn off the functionality that I’m paying for.
Hi Thomas,
some of the features you mention are being developed right at this time, so don’t worry, those are coming. The redirects give you two options: either creating a file that has to be loaded on the webserver, or let WordPress handle the redirects entirely, not unlike how Redirection did it.
Hi Joost,
Thank you for both your replies I appreciate that very much. And I just purchased your Post Connector plug-in which works great. look forward to The upgrades.
I think somebody else’s brought this up but on to my clients websites there been big issues with “Soliloquy” I had to revert back to the old plug-in. In order to make it function. I’m assuming because of the popularity of Soliloquy this will be remedied quickly. I had the same issue with it’s sister plug-in the Envira Gallery plug-in that is built from a lot of the same code as Soliloquy. I am Not a slider fan myself however if I explain to the client why I don’t like sliders, and they insist anyway I want to use the fastest plug-in available for sliders, and that has always been Soliloquy but now that the Envira Gallery plug-in is available and does not “slide” looking forward to being able run either plug-in with your updated SEO plug-in.
I appreciate the information regarding Synthesis and your plug-ins ability to complete the 301 redirects. I’ve now connected with an edge cast ADN ( not a typo application delivery network) and it Is extremely fast.
All the best,
Thomas
Hi Yoast and team,
Great release and thanks for the lovely bulk edit feature. Lovely indeed and save me a ton!
As everything is rather okay on my end, the only issue is the sitemap. Getting it fix would be nice. It keep showing 404 error and my Webmaster Tool is driving me nuts. Haha!
Have a great day guys.
Hey, I am some serious problems with the tabs “General, Home, Post Type, etc… not functioning. As well as, in the Social category none of the tabs are working.
I am concern that I am not willing to apply the new update to my other websites.
What advice do you have. In the mean time I am going to install the old version of the ‘wordpress-seo’ plugin.
Either way I want to thank you for your efforts with this plugin.
Noe & the goazweb staff
I like all this change ,,iam going crazy for use the premium version..Yoast is any cupon discout for one Single Site , thanks..
In the new Google+ setting, I’m a bit confused. Do we check or uncheck the box on “Add Google+ specific post meta data” to add everything but author metadata to pages?
Yes. That could probably do with better text :)
Thank you. I’m taking that as yes to check the box. That’s the best guess I had for it, but nice to have clarity.
For all the bugs and such with this new release, I still think that this very complex plugin wipes the floor with everything else and am amazed that you offer so much in the free version.
Thanks to you and your team for all of the hard work, and especially for speeding up the plugin for performance too!
Nice i’m not the only once confused. Its like a riddle.
Hi Joost –
I don’t believe you’ve answered her question. Her question is – should it be checked, or should it not be checked..
So, to rephrase the question to enable a yes/no response from you, here it is:
Should it be checked?
And my question is –
if it IS checked, does it hide rel=”author” on posts?
Thanks for your attention!
Hi,
You don’t need to reply. You have to click on save changes button for it to be generated again, even though I didn’t make any changes. Anyway I’m happy it working again now.
Cheers
Thanks for the update. However I’m not sure if it’s a bug but I can’t get my sitemap_index.xml to appear and how can I regenerate it again. That option seems to be gone? Any ideas how to get my sitemap back?
I got the same bug :(
did you fix the error of social graph, that when “Add Open Graph meta data” not ticked it still enables it.
Hi, Joost. Thanks for the great work you guys do.
I run my websites on Genesis and have always set up my breadcrumbs through the Genesis theme settings, ignoring WP SEO’s Breadcrumb settings. Now, after upgrading (1.5.2), my breadcrumbs, though set to show in Genesis, are not showing unless I enable them in WP SEO. Will you guys please update it so that Genesis takes priority here?
Okay, so after playing with it a bit, I actually like how the breadcrumbs work in the new 1.5.2 with Genesis. I’m used to modifying the breadcrumbs display by modifying the genesis_breadcrumb_args in functions.php. But, I do like being able to use the WPSEO Internal Links page for those global settings.
The only problem I can see with the new functionality is that upon upgrade, my breadcrumbs disappear. I then have to go to the Enable Breadcrumbs setting in Internal Links and set my options there. It would be great if WPSEO could recognize the Genesis settings and, if breadcrumbs are enabled through Genesis, automatically enable breadcrumbs (and automatically fill in the modified breadcrumb arguments if any exist in functions.php).
So, that’s asking a lot of a plugin that’s not made only for Genesis, but it’s always worked flawlessly alongside Genesis, and this update forces me to go make these changes manually to all my clients’ sites when I update their WP SEO plugin.
Whether these changes are made or not, I appreciate the inclusion of RDFa in breadcrumbs and rolling in SEO Extended. Thanks, Yoast team.
Thanks for the update. However, as a premium owner, I’m a bit dumbfounded on why you would kill the google news functionality with the update.
I understand that you want to make money with the news plugin now, which I will gladly pay for it, but no email or notice that you would kill this plugin with the update?
So I guess my real question is, when will the “new” news plugin be up and running? If it’s more than a few days, we might have to take our business elsewhere.
I had a huge problem running the news plug-in it malfunctioned running WP SEO premium this is something I thought would’ve been taken care of or least made so that it could not occur for people that are actually paying you for your product. unfortunately when the failure occurred it just so happened during googles indexing of the site the news plug-in had an issue with the premium plug-in therefore leaving tons of 404’s & 500 errors
when the hosting company explained to me that these plug-ins were the problem I did not think this would be as big of a deal then I went to your site and saw that you are no longer even allowing downloads for the news plug-in.
I’m not trying to be critical on masking is those of us that are paying for premium plug-ins we should have at least the ability to run other plug-ins you make without having to worry about them not functioning correctly because they cause problems when they’re running together. I would understand if it was a different company you can’t possibly test every plug-in company however functionality within your own plug-ins should be at the top of the list for people who are paying.
The news plugin had been giving random issues for random reasons for months, which is why we decided to stop allowing people to download it until we fixed it for real. We made that decision quite a while ago and the news SEO page has said for quite some time now that the plugin was not working as we wanted it too. It’s only a very small group of people using that so made no sense to delay everything until we had that released too.
In about a months time, I think, we’ll release News SEO again, as a premium product, with proper support and everything it needs to really do well what it does.
Hi Daniel,
News SEO was never part of the premium plugin and hasn’t been maintained for over a year due to time constraints. We’ve taken it down more than 2 months ago because it didn’t work with current versions of our plugin and we couldn’t support it right now.
We’re working hard on pushing it out there but it’ll be a month or so at least before it’s ready. That has absolutely nothing to do with this update though as the two were never related so I’m not sure what the misunderstanding is here, to be honest.
The decision to do this was awful. You have two plugins working together as one and decide to kill off just the one without mentioning it anywhere? List it in the changelog for god’s sake!
Totally understand. It is strange though, because the news sitemaps were being generated with current posts before the update.
I will implement a short term solution for this problem and wait for the updated news plugin. Keep up the good work.
BTW, I bought the premium version not for the extra features (all that stuff can be handled in webmaster tools), but to support the hard work you guys do.
Excited to check it out. Thanks!
Awese to see this update. Yoast has been my go to plug in for a number of years now, and never fails to provide the results I’m looking for.
Looking forward to the updates and even better results. Well done guys.
I updated and my whole site went white! I had to go to FTP make it inactive and it went back to the prior version. It works fine there but when I go back to updated version it all goes white again. The dashboard, the site to the public, everything is just white. So I am to the previous version of 1.5
I am not sure what number it was set to upgrade to before, but 1.5.2 it there. Do you think it is 1.51 that was the issue?
I had the same, running a ProPhoto theme on WP 3.8.1.
Updating to 1.5 resulted in site loss and not being able to access that or the admin panel. Via FTP I renamed the plugins folder and was able to see site again. Manually installed to 1.5.2 but was then unable to activate this plugin. All other plugins were fine.
Restored my site and DB back to last know good from 24 hrs earlier and installed 1.5.2. Again lost site. Restored again and kept at v1.4. This works ok so I’m leaving it there. Clearly there’s something going on here though.
Guy, Do you have the Version 1.4.25 in a zip file? I cannot find it. I had to delete the last version to get my site up and now cannot find the last one I had installed.
Can you share the old version? I would sooooo appreciate it if anyone out there has it.
You can download older versions on the plugin’s page on wordpress.org.
I am still afraid to update, still running the older version. Will there be a fi for the white screen? Third time is a charm…
Going back to the old version is not really a good solution. I’d much rather figure out what’s causing the issue.
Also getting the white screen in admin, any solution yet?
Just as an fyi, I am using a Templatic theme as well.
Hi Joost,
My site is also white-screened (as is my admin area). It went white following the update of plug-in. Happy to provide details if you’d like to investigate. thanks – Chris
Hi Joost, If you would like access to my site to figure this out I would gladly comply. I love your plug-in and would love to upgrade, but like Guy, My site has to function and so I had to add the old version back.
Please let me know if you would like the login.
Agreed Joost. But I have no choice right now as 1.5 white screens my site and makes it unviewable….
Hi Jerri – try this:
https://github.com/Yoast/wordpress-seo/releases
Grab the zip for the 1.4.25 source code
Hi jerri
I too have the white screen of death on my site using the Templatic Geoplaces 4 theme so backed to 1.4.25.
All my other sites OK so looks like a Templatic problem.
Wonder what other Templatic themes are affected?
Guy Thanks so much for the link! I found it, downloaded it and my site is back!
Do you think your particular template was what didn’t play nice with this plugin? I am using a Templatic theme, and I have another site that this happened on with the same theme. But a Genesis one I am using and an Elegant Theme on worked fine with the upgrade.
I think I will keep this zip for now, and try to update later with maybe 5.4 or 5.4.
Thanks Again!
Jerri
Great Job Joost,
The bulk title, description editor and SEO file editor are great features. Now, i don’t head to my Cpanel to edit the Robots.txt file. Keep continue the awesome work :)
Hello, do I need to rewrite all my WP page titles/describtions? Asking because in Existing and New Yoast Seo title text boxes I see nothing… Like in your photo.
No, you don’t have to. If you have the right title template and like what the titles look like, you’re perfectly OK!
I found a bug, into my index.php i use the simple function:
I have in options, the next setup for title in homepage: %%sitename%% %%page%% %%sep%% %%sitedesc%%
Now the sitedesc is not showed anymore, i had to activate “Force rewrite titles”, but on previous plugin versions works without activate it.
If i use %%sitedesc%% on titles for posts it works without activate option “Force rewrite titles”, wich means it´s a bug.
Can you fix it? Thanks in advance.
Hey Joost! I absolutely love your plugin, but I wanted to let you know that the most recent update made breadcrumbs stop working on a project I am currently working on. I had to revert to 1.4. Thanks for all you’ve done for the WordPress community.
Joel
Hi Joel,
that’s probably due to how you were using them, were you using the code that we always suggested within the plugin?
Hi Joost, I use your plugin with Genesis Framework, but now breadcrumbs does not work perfectly. I must enable breadcrumbs feature both on WP SEO and Genesis, and breadcrumbs show only “Home » my post title”. If I choose “Taxonomy to show in breadcrumbs for: Posts:” is “category”, breadcrumbs on sub-category (and post in sub-category) like that: “Home » WordPress » Home » WordPress » Plugins” or “Home » WordPress » Home » WordPress » Home » WordPress » Plugins » My Post Title”.
Please fix ít for us. Thanks Yoost!
I am experiencing the same issue with WordPress 3.8.1, Genesis 2.0.2 and WordPress SEO 1.5.2.2.
Ideally I wish to use breadcrumbs as I am doing some advanced filtering on them.
Stefan: Thanks for the tip,I’ve been searching for a solution to this for almost a week!
Awesome work! I just have one question. I realize your News SEO update has been delayed. Are there any alternatives you could recommend as an interm solution?
To paraphrase my comments from our team chat: Bulk edit titles? WOOOO!!!
Hi Yoast, Thanks for the update. I couldn’t any setting inside the plugin configuration that has to do with the page speed optimization feature you are talking about. Is it just working under the table?
It’s all under the hood, nothing you need to do!
Hi, I’ve got WordPress SEO Premium 1.04 running and no matter how many times I go to the Dashboard/Updates are, it does not show up.
Also, I’ve gone back to my original purchase email, and clicked on the link to download my product, and it still only downloads version 1.04, not the current/new version.
How do I download it?
Hi Jason,
WP SEO Premium 1.0.4 is actually the right version, although we’ve just pushed out 1.0.5 with a small bugfix. That version has all the same code as the WordPress SEO plugin version 1.5. I know this is a bit weird, but those numbers will update independently of each other.
Hi, I noticed what maybe is a small bug in the google+ social options:
my g+ publisher page is:
https://plus.google.com/+Studiolegalechianeseweb/posts
but when I hit save the address is rewrites to:
https://plus.google.com/Studiolegalechianeseweb/posts
Basically the sister removes the “+” and the result is a 404 error.
Thanks
Thanks for reporting this issue, we have it as an issue on GitHub and will look into this.
I posted this a reply to another post, but I’m thinking it’s hard to keep up (there were 20 comments 1/2 hour ago), so here it is as a single reply:
The question may sound silly, but if this “strip category” option disappears, what are the effects on posts already written (and linked to from other sites)? Will the url turn to /category/post for these old posts as well, or only for the posts written after the option is turned off/disappears?
Thank you!
Gee, thanks for adressing this! I’ll keep in mind this lack of responsiveness.
It seems like it is important, as stopping this “strip category” function from operating will simply change the links for ALL posts, as some other user said. So I’m thinking SEO effects for posts that have external incoming links.
Gene, you’re not reading right. I’ve already replied to it in other spots, and the cynicism isn’t appreciated. It doesn’t change the permalinks for all posts, just for categories. We haven’t disabled anything yet and we will make sure that you’re not suddenly left with breaking links.
Sorry then, I checked the comments and I haven’t found anything, except for Hans Mestrum’s, that confirmed all posts now have /category/.
So no permalink changes for posts already written then? Sounds great. Thank you.
+1 for WP No Category Base. I’ve used it for years and its been rock solid. I did try out the WordPress SEO function for removing category base for a short while but it was flakey, so I went back to WP No Category Base.
Gene, you should not be seeing /category/ in your post URLs unless you actually have that in your permalinks settings (instead of /%category%/ perhaps?). This is only about /category/ in the URLs for category pages (not post pages). If you’re getting that, it’s coming from somewhere else..
Can’t you just use this plugin for the stripping of the category base? “WP No Category Base” – that’s what I use.
Hi Joost,
1.5.2 doesn’t seem to be recognising outbound links, even though I have them in my posts. I have tried removing them and re-adding.
Not sure if this is something I am doing wrong, or a bug you have noticed too.
exactly the same for me :-(
please, give us a solution for this bug in this awesome plugin
asis
Same here… also having some issues with searchphrase density. It says the search term was not found even though its there. I can imagine development gets more complex now that more people are involved as Yoasts team is growing. Perhaps would be a good idea to do some more QA?
Oh and BTW everyone’s more than welcome to contribute to the PHP Unit Testing set we’re slowly building on GitHub!
Gert-Jan, we’ve been testing this release for 2 months. 800 beta testers have been testing for over a month as well. We did a rewrite of 1/3 of the code so we were actually expecting more issues than we got :)
Unfortunately, it turns out specific hosts have specific issues that won’t come up in our testing. Remember that we have close to 2.5 million users, running this plugin alongside about 70,000 other plugins, let alone themes, making the whole thing rather untestable. Both the links and the keyword density bug have been fixed though and will be in the next release, probably due on tuesday or wednesday morning (we’re trying to cram in some more fixes).
Hello Joost
thanks for your quick help and responses!
I updated again this morning and the outbound links now work, but it still does not recognize the keyword density or the alt-texts on images.
Will this be fixed in an upcoming update?
I would love a blog article written about how (and if) the Yoast SEO plugin works with Genesis’s built-in SEO. How does it enhance it? Does it work together? Is there redundancy? Which entries take effect if there is a Genesis SEO value and a Yoast SEO value that does the same thing?
As far as I know (read it on a blog post of Genesis somewhere), when you use one of the popular SEO plugins for WP, all Genesis SEO settings get overruled.
Thanks for this update!!
I’m curious to know the name of the app or plugin which created the performance graph from EasyDigitalDownloads shown above. Can you share?
Just checked with Pippin and he’s using New Relic to generate these graphs.
Thanks for the update. But when I login WordPress there is no option for it upgrade. When will be available for upgrade.
Go to Dashboard -> Updates. Should show there.
Great stuff Joost, just did that and its upgraded. Will be doing it on other sites too. Thanks for the tip.
Yoast Rocks!! Thanks
Wow, that’s really MAJOR updates. I liked the bulk edit feature although I think you could combine both title and desc options together in one page instead of two.
As for the og update, I didn’t see it yet.
After all you did great, good job, and greetings to the new team :)

Thanks Yoast and it’s community for this great update. I’ve just updated the WordPress SEO plugin; but for the Local plugin i never saw the update; even before because i was still on 1.1.17. I run always my updates asap. After i went to the dashboard / updates, then WP noticed that there was an update available for the Local plugin.
As i investigate this, i see it also on my other sites that available plugins for Local are not noticed.
Do you have some idea about this ?
Hi Dave,
the new version has a much better update manager, so we can debug better, but unfortunately I couldn’t tell you why it’s not working now as the old version gives crap feedback on that. Please update manually one more time and see if it works after that :)
Hi Joost,
I’ve just updated to v1.5, but I’m getting the following message:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function mb_strlen() in /home/payzip/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/admin/TextStatistics.php on line 83
Not sure how to get past it. Any ideas?
Try 1.5.1, should be available in a few seconds :)
Just updated, but now I get this:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function mb_strtolower() in /home/payzip/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-seo/admin/TextStatistics.php on line 173
Ugh. 1.5.2 on its way, caught a few more.
It works! Awesome.
Thanks for your help Joost.
Hi Simon,
the mbstring extension apparently isn’t loaded in your install, and our check for it fails. We’ve just figured out a fix, I’ll commit to wordpress.org in a few minutes.
Great. Will that be a new update?
It is a new update, version 1.5.2 is now available at http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-seo/
Love speed improvements!.
Great news, thank you!
Awesome! Cant wait to check it out. How come you removed the easy removal of “category” from the url? Does not a short url rank better?
Well the improvement is marginal and it causes loads of issues…
Will there also be an update for the Google News Plugin?
Actually I can only see the update for the core plugin, also no update for Video SEO.
You should see a 1.6.1 update for video SEO now, we had a small bug in 1.6 there so didn’t push out the update yet, but I just did :)
I don’t see an updated video SEO plugin ( email or auto plugin upgrade notification). Where can I get the updated version?
Thanks.
Huge update. Thanks!!
This seems to be a very comprehensive overhaul. I switched seo plugins today on my blog maybe you just pulled me back.
Hi Yoast,
Thanks for your amazing plugin! I have a doubt about this update:
Can you tell me if the “data transporter”[1] still works after you changed the post metadata?
[1] http://wordpress.org/plugins/seo-data-transporter/
We haven’t tested it, it probably works but we’ll make it more efficient.
Hello Yoast,
Just installed the plugin. Noticed one bug for me: when I’m in the options for the SEO plugin, all other menu options become unclickable. If needed, I can provide you access to the backend.
Stefan
I’ve noticed the same thing on some of my sites, but I haven’t checked them all. Also, the update broke one of my sites (something to do with Yoast breadcrumbs) with a Fatal error. No doubt you guys will get it fixed.
I really like the bulk editor feature, btw. I’d like to see the “SEO indicator” on these pages.
Rather sure that’s a JS issue with another plugin… Seeing any errors in your JS console? (if you know what that is)
Sorry, don’t know what it is, but I probably know which plugin is causing the problem. Was looking for a replacement for it anyway.
@Stefan, can you kindly share which plugin you think is the culprit there? I just noticed I have the same issue after upgrading WP SEO – I also can’t click on most of the other menu items now.
I can click on the menu items located *below* SEO, but the ones *above* it (Settings, Tools, Users, Plugins, Appearance, Pages, Media) are unclickable. However, oddly enough, Posts and Dashboard *are* still clickable. No idea why this is happening now since the update to SEO 1.5.2.
The same occurs at my test site. I am running Safari on Mavericks.
1.5.2.1 (arriving on WordPress.org any second now) should fix this.
Thanks so much Barry! :)
This problem is fixed, an update will be released soon.
I think it’s the easy media pro plugin (when speed checking I can see various JS defects which cause a longer load).
I use the latest safari/chrome on Mac OS X Maverics.
Even after updating to 1.5.2 the problem still occurs.
64-bit Win7, and I’m getting the same results (other menus not clickable while I’m on any WP-SEO page) in Firefox 27.0.1, IE11, and Chrome 33.
What operating system and browser are you using? Just want to rule something out :)
Great Job Joost.
This update will be available on the official WP repo or not?
We need to upgrade it manually?
It’s on WordPress.org already indeed :) you should see the update when you log in to your WP backend.
I think there is a little bug on twitter cards for MU install
The image path doesn’t contain the full URL.
The Twitter validator show an error.
Well…ok. I’m gonna wait :D
I can”t see it yet. Probably is a matter of time.
Thanks.
Still don’t see the notification to update in plugin dashboard? How else do I update, simply by unpacking and uploading to the same folder, or de-activate, deinstall and then install latest ver?
Why did you skip the Strip the category base (usually /category/) from the category URL?
Was kind of handy.
Because it was buggy as hell. If you’re using it, you’ll see a notice next to the setting with a suggestion for another plugin you can use to keep the functionality.
I’ve always had this option activated and I liked it, but when I read that it will be removed, I thought to remove it by myself right away, so I turned off the option.
I chose “cat” as base for the categories and immediately the addresses with /cat/ in the URL have shown as expected.
The problem is that now Google Web. tells me that the description is duplicated in the archive pages, because it has both addresses, with and without base.
No news about the duplicated pages following the re-introduction of category base in the URLs?
They are increasing gradually as Google find the pages.
Tried to fix by setting a canonical URL for each category.
I will see in the coming days the effect…
This latest version has destroyed my whole site, and please return the “remove category slug”.
Now now, “destroyed”, isn’t that a bit dramatic? :)
Hmmm can’t see the tip for another plugin on that page wpseo_permalinks …. Where can I find it?
If you didn’t have the feature enabled, you can’t see the option at all anymore :) It’s this one.
My highest ranking pages (and highest traffic generators) have the category stripped out so guess I will have to do a tonne of redirects now.
Top Level Cats plugin was updated two years ago. Removal of this feature was a very unpleasant surprise which results in lots of 404 errors.
Put aside SEO I always liked more the category URLs without the /category/.
Hans, you should check your WordPress Permalinks settings. I just upgraded to 1.5 and I am not seeing /category in my single post URLs after disabling this option.
Having “strip /category” disabled does not add “/category” to any single post page URLs. This option was meant to remove the /category base from URLs where posts are listed by category.
I tested the plugin mentioned: http://wordpress.org/plugins/fv-top-level-cats/ and it works.
@Gene I tested it and all posts have now the /category/ in from of the postname.
The question may sound silly, but if this “strip category” option disappears, what are the effects on posts already written (and linked to from other sites)? Will the url turn to /category/post for these old posts as well, or only for the posts written after the option is turned off/disappears?
Thank you!
The latest review of that plugin says it is not working in the latest version of WordPress.
I have enabled it, but thanks for the link!
Awesome news Yoast! I’m really looking forward to using the bulk editor and updated Video SEO plugin. Thanks!
Some great work has gone in to that, well done Joost. Suppose i better go and update all the sites :)
This plugin gets better with every release. Thanks for the update.
Hi Joost. Unfortunately YOAST breaks the editor in wp – any fixes for this?
Great job Joost. I am using Yoast since i transfer my blogging from Joomla to WordPress! ;)
